I had hoped that the €10 Air Travel Tax would be abolished in the budget last Tuesday, but unfortunately, it remains in place. The challenge of attracting the UK market to Ireland is difficult enough at present without this further handicap. In addition, the scale of the income levies introduced will further reduce domestic demand, particularly for week-end breaks. As this market is critically important to the hotel sector, there is no doubt but that the next 12 months will present even greater challenges for this sector that those experienced up to now.
