TOURIST NUMBERS STILL DECLINING

According to figures released today by the CSO, visitor numbers to Ireland fell by 10.9% (596,400) in the year to August 2009 compared to the same period last year. The figures for the month of August show a 13% drop year on year. During August, visits by residents of Great Britain were down almost 25% while surprisingly, visits by residents of North America were up by 7.1%. Irish residents also took fewer foreign trips in August, down 11.5% compared with August 2008.
On a positive note, the Report of the Economic Working Group Discussions at the Global Irish Economic Forum & the Report of the Tourism Renewal Group provide plenty of ideas for the way ahead. Policy makers just need to take notice!
