Travel & Tourism figures released today by the CSO show a deterioration in both inbound and outbound travel for the 3rd quarter of 2009 (July -September).
When compared with the same period in 2008 -
- Visits abroad by Irish residents were down 12% while trips for the purpose of holiday/leisure and recreation fell by 17%. This the first time since 1991 that such a decrease in the third quarter has been recorded
- Overseas visits to Ireland decreased by 12%. Visits from the UK fell by 17% while those from other European destinations fell by 10%. Despite the weak dollar, visitors numbers from the USA and Canada were virtually unchanged
- While abroad, Irish visitors spent €2,012m. In contrast, visitors to Ireland spent €1,321m resulting in a net outflow of €691 million
- The average length of stay of visitors to Ireland decreased by 1.1 nights to 9 nights
- The number of nights spent in Guesthouses/B&B's and hotels fell by 33% and 22% respectively
