IRISH TOURISM RETURNS TO GROWTH IN THE FIRST QUARTER OF 2011

May has been a great month for Irish Tourism.
The government's 'Jobs Initiative' has given the sector a huge boost (see earlier post) and the visits of Queen Elizabeth II and President Barack Obama were a resounding success. On May 26th, the CSO published first quarter figures (Jan-Mar). They show that the total number of overseas trips to Ireland increased by 8.6% (92,800) compared with the same period last year. Visits from North America were up by 11.9%, visits from Great Britain were up 7.2% while visits from Other Europe were up 8.9%.
So, while it's positive that overseas visitor numbers are on the up, it is worth remembering that we still have 364,600 (23.6%) fewer overseas visitors than during the same period three years ago (1,177,600 vs 1,542,200). Therefore, it's no time to be complacent.
