The news in The Sunday Times at the week-end that Starwood Hotels & Resorts is not proceeding with the development of a luxury hotel at Killeen Castle in Co. Meath is hardly a surprise. Given the number of superb resort developments in recent years including Doonbeg, Carton House, Killenard and Moyvalley, it is clear that the sector is over-supplied. Having secured very prestigious international tournaments here a number of years ago (The European Open, The WCG-American Express Championships & The Ryder Cup), it is concerning that no further international competitions of this calibre are scheduled for the foreseeable future. In addition, according to the Failte Ireland Visitor Attitudes Survey 2008, 17% of golfing holidaymakers said they were dissatisfied with the cost of golfing here. It's time to get back to the clubhouse to find a way out of the bunker.
