It has been an unexpected week for Irish tourism interests with the news that Dermot Mannion and Paul O'Toole both resigned from their positions as CEO of Aer Lingus and CEO of Tourism Ireland respectively. Both men have made very significant contributions to the development of Irish tourism. Dermot Mannion expanded the Aer Lingus route network into Ireland, opened up new markets and made it easier for more visitors than ever to get here. The hope is that, despite the current climate, Aer Lingus will be able to retain most of these services. Paul O'Toole has done a superb job at Tourism Ireland. Formed in the aftermath of the Good Friday Agreement, it has punched way above its weight in marketing the island of Ireland in the hugely competitive international tourism marketplace. There is no doubt that whoever suceeds them will have a difficult task in the changed environment we're now in.
