TAKING TOURISM SERIOUSLY

In New Zealand, the Prime Minister John Key is also the 'Minister of Tourism'. Here, we are going in the opposite direction. As our tourism numbers continue to decline (down 15.1% in June '09 compared to June '08), the An Bord Snip Nua Report suggests that the Department of Arts, Sport & Tourism should be discontinued and that tourism activites 'could transfer' to the Department of Enterprise, Trade & Employment. In effect, it is saying that tourism is really not that important. No prizes for guessing which country is likely to have a more successful tourism economy in future years!
