2011 TOURISM TRENDS & DEVELOPMENTS

Given the events of the past twelve months, it is difficult to forecast with any certainty what 2011 will bring. However there are a few developments which I am looking forward to  -

  • Tourism will become more centre-stage in Ireland. We will have a new government, a new Minister for Tourism  and possibly a new departmental configuration. With Fine Geal leader Enda Kenny, a former Minister for Tourism and recent proposals from both Fine Gael and the Labour, it will be interesting to see the approach taken
  • Ireland's reputation as a sports tourism destination will be further enhanced as it hosts two major international events. The Europa League Final will take place in the Aviva Stadium in May while the Solheim Cup will take place at Killeen Castle in September
  • As the Convention Centre Dublin  (CCD) opens for its first full year, we will see increased activity in the business tourism segment
  • Following the lead of the hotel and restaurant sectors, our pubs are likely to provide better value offerings to help attract and retain custom
  • Restaurants may begin to adopt the airline pricing model to stimulate revenue and yield. For example, Cafe Luc in London is offering 15, 3 course menus for just £1 (Jan 7 -7 Feb). Menus are available at lunch, afternoon tea and dinner
  • International hotel chain Starwood will expand its 'W' lifestyle brand in Europe. 'W' hotels will open London, St. Petersburg and Paris following earlier openings in Barcelona and Istanbul. Mandarin Oriental will debut in Paris while the Four Seasons Park Lane London will reopen after a complete refurbishment
