LEO VARADKAR, OUR NEW MINISTER FOR TRANSPORT, TOURISM & SPORT

A new Minister and a new departmental configuration. What an interesting mix! I'm delighted with the Ministerial appointment. Leo is one of the most capable politicans in the country and he will make a major impression. No one in the sector saw that coming!
However, I'm not quite as pleased with the new department. The recent Fine Gael tourism policy document pledged to put tourism at the centre of economic recovery. I was expecting therefore to see tourism positioned within the new Jobs Enterprise and Innovation Department. Remember, that's what was done in New Zealand.
While there is a good fit between transport and tourism, it is important that Leo makes a very strong case for the sector in government. Policies adopted by other departments should contribute positively to the development of the sector......think about environment, agriculture & food, education etc.
I am confident that Leo will make a great case and be an excellent Minister. I wish him well.
